Harrington posted a three-under-par 67 Tuesday to grab a one-stroke lead after
the first round of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf at the Mid Ocean Club.
U.S. Open champ Angel Cabrera is one shot back at minus-two. Masters winner
Zach Johnson and 2003 U.S. Open champ Jim Furyk are tied for third at one-
over-par 71.
Tiger Woods, the PGA champion, declined his invitation and was replaced by
Furyk, who topped the Major Championship Points list. Furyk won this event the
same year he claimed the U.S. Open title.
Cabrera took the early on with a birdie on the par-four fifth. However,
Harrington rallied to take the lead.
The Irishman bogeyed the third, but bounced back with birdies on five and six
to join Cabrera in the lead at minus-one. Harrington took the lead for good
with a birdie on the par-four ninth.
Cabrera bogeyed the ninth to fall two back. Harrington and Cabrera both
birdied No. 11, but Harrington extended his lead as he followed with a birdie
on the 12th.
Harrington and Cabrera each bogeyed 13. Harrington followed with another bogey
at the 15th to slip to minus-two. He got back to three-under with as he
birdied the 16th.
Cabrera fought back within one of the lead with birdies on 16 and 18 to post
two-under.
Furyk parred the first nine holes, then bogeyed 10th. He atoned for that
mistake with a birdie on 11. Furyk though bogeyed the 14th, then parred out.
Johnson struggled mightily at the outset. He bogeyed the first three holes and
dropped to four-over with a bogey on the fifth. The Masters champ birdied the
eighth, 11th and 18th to get back to plus-one.
