Twellman leads Revolution over Galaxy

Soccer Betting Lines

05/13/2007 - Carson, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Taylor Twellman scored twice in the second half, including the game-winner seconds after Los Angeles tied the match in the 84th minute, as New England escaped with a 3-2 victory on Saturday night.

Twellman scored his 80th career goal early in the second half and added his 81st in the closing minutes as New England scored three times after halftime to extend its unbeaten streak to six games. The Revolution (4-1-2) moved into first place in the Eastern Conference.

"It's my teammates," said Twellman, who already has six goals this year. "I'm in the right spot at the right times."

Los Angeles (1-2-1) opened the scoring just 14 minutes in when Kyle Martino scored his first goal of the season. The early strike was set up by Landon Donovan, who assisted on both Los Angeles goals to push his season total to six, and Peter Vagenas.

In addition to scoring a goal, Martino also prevented a goal for L.A. In the 34th minute, Twellman's header was misplayed by Galaxy goalie Joe Cannon and the ball bounced off his hands toward the goal line. Martino, who was at the left post, made a soft touch to knock the ball off the line to Cannon and he covered up the ball.

New England did get the equalizer less than two minutes into the second half when Adam Cristman converted a side volley from just a few yards out. Cristman's first goal of the season was assisted by Steve Ralston and Andy Dorman. It was the sixth assist this year for Ralston and moved him within one of the all-time MLS lead.

Just five minutes after tying the match, Twellman gave New England its first lead. After heading a shot off the crossbar, Twellman followed the rebound and headed the ball again, this time beating Cannon.

After falling behind, Los Angeles picked up the pace to try and net the equalizer. In the 84th minute, New England's Michael Parkhurst preserved the lead by clearing a ball off the goal line at the left post. But on the ensuing corner, Donovan served a great ball to Tyler Marshall and he flicked the ball with his head inside the far post.

Before Los Angeles' fans even stopped celebrating, Twellman was streaking into the box on the other end to put New England back in front. Pat Noonan and Sharlie Joseph set up the goal, which Twellman finished from the top of the goalie box with a defender on his back.

Los Angeles had a few good chances in the closing minutes, including a Martino bicycle in 90th minute that went wide of right post. A corner taken by Donovan with 30 seconds left was easily grabbed by Revolution keeper Matt Reis to preserve the win in a rematch of the 2002 and 2005 MLS Cup - both won by L.A.

New England remains on the road for its next game when it plays Houston on May 19. Los Angeles is the road team when it plays CD Chivas USA on May 20 at the Home Depot Center - both teams' home stadium.

MySportsbook.com and Kentucky Derby Offer Bonuses
The 2008 Kentucky Derby has announced a $1-million bonus for this weekend’s 134th ‘Run for the Roses’ and MySportsbook.com is doing the same.

Well, not quite $1 million, but MySportsbook.com is offering a 75% rebate for Kentucky Derby lines. Check out the exclusive horse racing bonus for all the details.

According to MySportsbook.com, the favorites for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky are: Curlin (+250); Street Sense (+500); Scat Daddy (+700); Circular Quay (+750); and Nobiz Like Shobiz (+800).

Derby organizers announced this week that there will be a $1-million bonus at the 2007 Kentucky Derby odds if the first-place horse wins by more than 6 1/2 lengths – the margin of Barbaro's victory last year. The bonus would be divided Saturday among the winning trainer, jockey, owner and a charity, with each receiving 25 percent. The designated charity is the Barbaro Memorial Fund.

''It's certainly creative, it's certainly fun and it has something for the horsemen, which we always want to embrace,'' Churchill Downs president and chief executive Robert Evans said at a news conference. ''What's really cool is it will force us to remember Barbaro.''

Meanwhile, the Derby favorite – Curlin – is going against the odds this year. It's been 125 years since Apollo won after skipping his 2-year-old season, and not since Regret in 1915 has such a lightly seasoned horse worn the blanket of red roses.

Arkansas Derby winner Curlin – unbeaten in three career races – tries to overcome both those obstacles in Saturday's 133rd Derby.

''We're not running against history,'' trainer Steve Asmussen said Monday. ''We're running against who they load up.''

Six other horses have run in the Derby without benefit of 2-year-old races and with three or fewer starts. The best any of them managed was a sixth-place finish by Showing Up last year.

Asmussen dismissed suggestions that Curlin's lack of racing experience could keep him from the winner's circle.

”He exudes confidence and he's got a great presence about him,'' the trainer said. ''I feel great about the position we're in. He's not worried about anything, why should you be?''

The Kentucky Derby is at 4:04 p.m., ET Saturday.
